North East Culinary Awards to Showcase Region’s Talent

The North East Culinary and Trade Awards returns on 13 and 14 May at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newcastle as part of the HITS Expo 2024

A highlight in the culinary calendar for all catering students and professional chefs in the North East region, NECTA 2024 will feature a host of competitions. They are all aimed at celebrating and showcasing the region’s most outstanding talent whilst raising aspirations for those in the industry.

Highlights include the Inter-College competitions, North East Chef of the Year, and Young Chef of the Year competitions.

The North East Chef of the Year competition, sponsored by Crosbys Catering Supplies, promises an enticing prize for the winner. A luxurious dinner, bed, and breakfast experience at the Michelin-starred restaurant Hjem in Northumberland.

The theme for this year’s North East Chef of the Year competition is “green gastronomy,” testing skill, creativity, and dedication. All chefs will have to demonstrate knowledge of key sustainability themes. For example, food miles, food waste, climate protection and ethical ingredient sourcing.

The Young Chef of the Year competition grants a talented chef under 23 a two-week internship. Plus an exclusive foraging masterclass at the esteemed Michelin-starred Restaurant Pine as the prize.

This competition will shine a spotlight on dedicated, up-and-coming chefs. It will also provide them with a platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable exposure in the industry.

Erudus sponsors Inter-College competitions where students from top regional colleges compete in skills-based demonstrations. From Sugarcraft and Fish Prep to Young Barista, sponsored by Ringtons.

Chris Jewitt, founder of Food and Drink North East and Chair of NECTA says:

“NECTA is the only regional culinary competition in the North East and we are happy to again be hosting North East Chef of The Year, Young Chef of The Year and Inter-College competitions.

“The opportunity to influence the direction of the region’s hospitality industry, and inspire and witness the next generation of North East chefs and front-of-house leaders, is an experience we should all embrace.

“It is our ambition to nurture a world-class food, drink and hospitality economy. In that way, creating a region of sustainable gastronomy and an industry built on quality, heritage and authenticity. As well as retaining the North East’s best talent. NECTA plays a huge role in that mission.”

Food and Drink North East, in partnership with Destination North East England, organises the HITS Expo 2024. It’s a two-day experience highlighting excellence within the hospitality, tourism, supply chain, and food and drink industries in the North East. NECTA 2024 occurs during this event.
