Review: The Coniston Hotel & Country Estate

Luxe packs an overnight bag and heads to review The Coniston Hotel & Country Estate for a night of peaceful bliss

The Coniston Hotel & Country Estate is nestled within the serene expanse of the Yorkshire Dales and it stands as a beacon of tranquillity.

For our one-night stay in the Dales, we venture the scenic route from the North East of England and in just two hours we find ourselves pulling up at the inviting-looking entrance.

This family-run estate is clearly a thing of pride for its owner Mr Bannister and his children, with the family owning the hotel for the past 50 years. Mr Bannister still lives on site and much of the daily life of the grounds sees involvement from his children.

The estate is very expansive. It’s situated in the heart of the rolling hills and fields is the hotel and spa itself. The hotel has grown organically over the years having begun life as a farm shop selling produce grown on the estate. Having continuously evolved, it has become one of North Yorkshire’s most sought-after destination hotels.

From the moment one sets foot onto the sprawling 1,400-acre woodland estate, it’s evident that every detail has been meticulously crafted to ensure a truly memorable stay.

The Dales accommodation at The Coniston is of an extremely high spec. We are in awe of its expansiveness, as we enter. Yet it retaines a cosy feel too – quite a feat. The view outdoors from the glazed doors onto the rolling hills and lake is quite breathtaking.

You could sit on your own patio and take in the fresh air and sounds of singing birds. In March, though, it’s still a tad cool, but we decide to experience it – it’s just too good to miss!

The Coniston Hotel Review: Blissful Relaxation

Whether one experiences the opulence of the hotel rooms or the cosy intimacy of the private cottages, each space exudes a sense of comfort and elegance. The attention to detail in the décor and furnishings speaks volumes about The Coniston’s commitment to providing an unforgettable experience for its guests.

Next up, we’re heading to experience some true downtime in the spa.

The spa at The Coniston truly stands out as a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation. As we step foot into the tranquil oasis, we get a sense of serenity that permeates the air.

The variety of treatments and therapies offered caters to every need, from soothing massages to invigorating facials. There are up to 30 distinct offerings awaiting. Ranging from the therapeutic touch of massages and invigorating body wraps to the gentle exfoliation of skin and the soothing scents of aromatherapy.

This all ensures that each guest could find their own path to blissful relaxation. Even for those who opt out of these serene treatments, there exists an opportunity for indulgence within the spa’s expansive amenities, including a generous 15-metre swimming pool, luxurious saunas, revitalising steam rooms, and tranquil jacuzzis.

The award-winning spa is called Nàdarra – Gaelic for natural – and nothing could be more natural than spending a couple of relaxing hours there soothing away life’s little challenges.

Venturing beyond the spa’s confines, guests are greeted by the picturesque view of the lake. It’s visible from either of the two expansive infinity pools. Abundant loungers, both indoors and outdoors, beckon patrons to unwind with beverages from the adjacent bar. It offers an experience of relaxation that is truly unparalleled.

‘The View’

The outdoor hot tub is a defining moment of the weekend though – utterly breathtaking. Perched atop a hill overlooking the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales, the hot tub offers an unparalleled vantage point from which to soak in the beauty of nature. As we sink into the warm, bubbling waters, we get a glimpse to panoramic views. They stretch as far as the eye can see.

The spa is a great feature for Consiton and something that does put a stamp on its unique qualities. The food is impressive too as we discover.

‘The View’ restaurant provides a wonderful dining setting. As dusk settle we can still see our expansive fields and hills in the distance, through the glazed viewpoints. These stunning views are there again the following day for our breakfast at The View. The View is 1 AA Rosette restaurant which celebrates the very best of the region, from local produce to local landscapes.

The culinary delights served at The Coniston’s restaurants hit great heights. The View is also accompanied by Macleod’s Bar & Lounge and not to forget Blossoms Kitchen – the Spa’s dining option.

Back to the View, though. From a perfectly cooked steak sourced from local farms to a divine duck starter showcasing the finest Yorkshire produce, my dishes are a testament to the culinary mastery of the chefs at the venue.

The Coniston Hotel Review: Focus on Local Produce

My partner’s succulent pan-fried scallops linger on her palate. Then her braised lamb shoulder and tongue with chestnut, rosemary rosti and caramelised cauliflower and carrot are described as ‘utterly divine’.

The cheese board boasts flavours that delight the senses with a great range of cheeses. And let’s not forget the heavenly Baileys Cremeux that caps off my partner’s meal, with pure indulgence.

A lovely bottle of Rioja from the extensive wine selection is the perfect accompaniment.

We then decide to take a stroll along one of the many walking trails close to the hotel to get some fresh air after dinner.

The Coniston is also doing its bit for the circular economy. Provenance is important to its brand and ESG philosophy. The emphasis on using local produce, sourced from nearby farms and suppliers, not only ensures the highest quality ingredients but also fosters a sense of connection to the land and its people. Knowing that every bite we take supports local farmers and artisans adds an extra layer of satisfaction to our dining experience.

Towards the end of our The Coniston Hotel review, the General Manager, Jamie Adamson approaches. His warmth and friendliness accentuate this family feel of Coniston. It’s these personal touches that truly make The Coniston stand out amidst a sea of luxury retreats. As we explore the wider grounds in his vehicle, Jamie introduces us to their newest offering. It’s the charming bell tents nestled within the rolling hills.

The addition of the bell tents brings an extra layer of charm. It offers families the perfect retreat to reconnect amidst nature’s embrace. With activities ranging from arts and crafts to nature trails, there’s something to delight every member of the family.
