Amid January blues and a chilly winter breeze, Caroline Dask layers up and heads to Dobson & Parnell to kick off 2024 and surround herself in the warmth of this lovely fine-dining restaurant…
A quick break in the middle of the week is always welcome, yet this time, it’s necessary as I, along with many others, am just getting back on my feet from the flu that has been flying around.
Our home for a few hours on a late Wednesday evening? Dobson & Parnell – a fine dining restaurant renowned for its British and European dishes, elegance and sheer opulence. With anticipation in the air, the short drive along the beautiful Quayside drops us off right at the door. And this is where our night begins…
Dobson & Parnell: First Impressions
Assistant Manager Luke greets us with a smile and promptly escorts us to our seats as we walk through the door. Looking around Dobson & Parnell it’s evident – there is no sign of pretentiousness, in fact, the calmly dimmed lights and the soft music in the background work as a charm to create an atmosphere that’s both refined and comfortably relaxed.
Tasteful décor of lights hanging from the ceiling, intimate tables for two and lively chatter around us set the night for a wonderful experience ahead. Looking around, it seems as though Dobson & Parnell is a perfect escape, whether you’re toasting to a new venture, or simply just catching up with a friend.
January Set Menu
Sipping on bubbly and glancing over the menu, it’s apparent that choosing our dinner tonight will be quite difficult. Each dish on the menu sounds more delightful than the other and with so many tempting options out there, I decide to ask Luke for his recommendation.
Unable to answer the question of whether I’d prefer something that is appealing to the eye or something that tastes extraordinary, I settle on a choice that gives me the best of both worlds. It’s Spiced Parsnip Pakoras, Green Chutney and Pickled Shallots for myself and Winter Squash Soup, Stilton And Sage Tortellini and Candied Seeds for my companion.
Upon the first bite, the culinary excellence and attention to detail are apparent. The golden, crunchy outside of my spiced parsnip pakoras blends beautifully with the soft and melt-in-your-mouth texture of the dish, however, the cherry on top of the cake is the green chutney. It adds a layer of savoury taste to the whole experience and before I know it, my plate is empty.
Next, following Luke’s recommendation, I indulge in Slow Cooked Leeks, Pommes Puree, Maitake Mushrooms, and Crispy Onion. This is where the chef’s expertise shines bright through the presentation of the dish as well as the burst of flavours happening in my mouth. The dish is the perfect balance of a milder taste of leeks paired wonderfully with delightfully salty and full of flavour maitake mushrooms. It’s a warm, comforting and incredibly cosy hug on a plate, perfect for this cold winter evening.
We finish our evening with Passionfruit Meringue Pie, making this dinner at Dobson & Parnell unintentionally vegetarian. There’s no room to devour it all, but a few bites sweeten the deal and bring a simply delicious conclusion to our evening.
Dobson & Parnell: Warm Goodbye’s
Chatting away and enjoying some lovely food, we don’t notice how quickly time escapes us and before we know it, it’s time to say goodbye.
