Visiting the Tempus is an experience like no other. With highly praised exceptional food, I know I am in for a treat.

The restaurant is located in an impressive and enchanting venue, situated in a 550 acre country estate in Northumberland.

I am immediately captivated by the wonderland inspired setting that unfolds before me. The interiors, drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, exude character and charm, seamlessly blending the pristine allure of newness with a touch of whimsical nostalgia. The ambience carries a sense of refined elegance mixed with playfulness, making it the perfect backdrop for a memorable afternoon tea experience.

My partner and I have the pleasure of indulging in the newly launched afternoon tea. A creation by the talented pastry chef, Catherine Smith. With a culinary journey that includes prestigious establishments like The Ritz and Betty’s Cookery School, Catherine’s expertise shines through in every delectable bite.

The menu, carefully curated to showcase the region’s culinary heritage, promises a journey through the flavours of Northumberland and the Borders.

As we take our seats in the bright and airy Orangery, a platter of mini cakes, sweet scones, and delicate finger sandwiches await. Each item on the menu is a testament to Catherine’s dedication to quality and local sourcing.

The Choux, Brown Sugar Craquelin, Toffee Apple Mousse, and Lemon and Orange Macaron possess an abundance of flavours. Each bite transporting us deeper into the essence of Northumberland.

The sweet scones, made with apples from the Charlton Hall Estate, are a delightful fusion of freshness and indulgence. The savoury offering featuring Northumberland Nettle Cheese and Chive is a unique twist that perfectly complements the sweetness of the other treats.

The selection of finger sandwiches is equally impressive. With choices like salmon and cream cheese, ham and wholegrain mustard, and hummus, sundried tomato, and rocket. Each bite is a harmonious blend of textures and tastes. It leaves us satisfied as we make our way through the beautifully presented afternoon tea.

Adding to the exquisite tea experience is the partnership with Bari Teas, a local tea supplier based in Amble. The extensive selection of loose leaf teas, from the robust, punchy Northumberland Bari breakfast tea to the delicate Sencha Fuji green tea, provides a perfect accompaniment to the decadent spread.

For those seeking an extra touch of luxury, the option to pair the afternoon tea with Laurent Perrier and Perrier Jouet champagne or sparkling wine and prosecco is a delightful choice.

Beyond the culinary delights, The Tempus offers a picturesque setting with outstanding views. The 15 sumptuous guest bedrooms coupled with the ground floor bar and restaurant, provide a luxurious retreat.

The all day dining experience, featuring breakfast, light lunch, dinner menu, and Sunday lunches, ensures that The Tempus becomes not just a destination for afternoon tea but a haven for gastronomic exploration throughout the day.

The Tempus’ new afternoon tea is served every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 2:30 pm – 4:45 pm. Pre booking is required no later than 48 hours ahead of the booking.
