Review: Bistro Greggs at Fenwick Newcastle

Buckle up as Caroline Dask heads to Bistro Greggs at Fenwick Newcastle, one of the hottest new eateries opening this Christmas…

This December, family-owned department store Fenwick is collaborating with leading food-on-the-go retailer Greggs on a one-of-a-kind pop-up at Fenwick Newcastle.

Launched on Friday 1 December, and running until New Year’s Eve, Bistro Greggs is an all-day dining experience, from 9 am to 8 pm serving breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes on the department store’s first floor.

It’s a fine dining experience like no other, with dishes served under silver cloches by waiters in Bistro Greggs aprons.

Both Greggs and Fenwick are brands from the North East and have a combined heritage of 225 years. This Christmas, they are teaming up to open a French-style restaurant, one, that we were lucky enough to visit.

Bistro Greggs: First Impressions

Arriving on a Friday evening, and leaving the busy week behind, Bistro Greggs is a lovely break. Upon a friendly welcome from one of the staff members, we are quickly shown to our seats and in our hands is a carefully curated menu, created by Fenwick Executive Head Chef, Mark Reid, in collaboration with Greggs.

A quick scan through it, and we’re introduced to interpretations of Gregg’s much-loved menu items enhanced through Fenwick’s culinary flair and gastronomic excellence.

To take our dining experience to new heights, we decide to start the evening with Mother Mercy’s signature cocktail – The Pink Jammie Fizz inspired by Greggs’ hard-to-resist iconic Pink Jammie doughnut. The flavours of raspberry, apple and fresh doughnut blend together perfectly and are a delight for sweet treat connoisseurs like myself.

Bistro Greggs: The Menu

Kicking off our culinary experience, we start with the country’s beloved Greggs Sausage Roll. Only this time, it arrives drizzled with piccalilli dressing, pickled carrots, cauliflower and cucumber.

The familiar taste of their signature sausage wrapped in flaky pastry was as comforting as ever. Yet the presentation and accompanying touches added an upscale flair.

Next up is the Greggs Steak Bake. Complemented by truffled dauphinoise potatoes, green beans and almonds. Upon the first bite, it was clear the steak bake upholds the high standard of taste and quality one would expect from Greggs and Fenwick.

The hearty filling and the perfectly baked pastry encapsulate the essence of comfort food. The familiar taste resonates, yet there is a subtle sophistication that enhances the overall experience. It’s a perfect combination of familiarity and refinement.

For dessert, the Yum Yum with caramel sauce and macadamia brittle are a delightful treat. Sweet, indulgent, reminiscent of Christmas and a perfect conclusion to the meal. The delicate sweetness and the flaky texture offer a harmonious contrast, leaving a lasting impression of satisfaction.

A Unique Experience

What truly stood out beyond the exceptional food was the warmth of the atmosphere of Bistro Greggs. Situated within Fenwick, it offers a relaxing escape from the Christmas shopping rush, providing a delightful experience with excellent food and wonderful company.

A visit to Bistro Greggs will prove to be a unique experience. A mix of fine dining and familiar tastes creates a harmonious blend of nostalgia and innovation.

Safe to say, it’s a welcome addition to the culinary scene. One that is undoubtedly enjoyed not only by us but by the whole of the North East.
