Stanhope Park

Transforming Stanhope Park

Redde Northgate plc and the Darlington Economic Campus won an auction organised by Darlington Cares in March 2023 to regenerate a local Darlington park. Redde Northgate plc based in Darlington partnered with The DEC, comprising of 8 Government departments and developed a plan of work.

This ongoing collaborative project involves Darlington Borough Council, a private sector company, local college students and civil servants across a number of departments.

As of September, over 390 hours of volunteering have been delivered by 95 volunteers.

Everyone taking part has loved working together in supporting this community project and seeing what has been achieved, the park has been transformed.

Darlington Cares, an organisation hosted by Darlington Borough Council set up to provide a coordinated approach to corporate social responsibility within the borough, organised an auction for Darlington parks.

To deliver a successful project, a plan was required to identify areas of the park that needed attention. This would need to include milestones to ensure that key areas of work were completed in advance of:

  • Stanhope Park Carnival 24 June
  • Northumbria in Bloom (NiB) judging 18 July
  • Britain in Bloom (BiB) judging 25 July

Stanhope Park: A Team Effort

Redde Northgate plc leads, Debbie Dixon and DEC, Sue Reeve, visited the park, with the park ranger, Darlington Cares and local councillors to scope the project. Areas identified included: renovating a mound to make this a feature; clearing overgrown tennis court perimeter to open this up; clearing overgrown bed areas and planting these up; litter picking, renovating numerous park benches; path edging and general cleaning and weeding.

A plan was developed, and volunteering dates were agreed and advertised.

Key areas of work were completed to schedule, in time for the community carnival in the park and the NiB and BiB judging.

Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the teamwork, being outdoors and giving back to the community. Residents and the public were pleased with the transformation, commenting that the park looks amazing.

The project has been a huge success, with a great concerted effort within a short timeframe.
