On 6 February 2022, Her Majesty The Queen achieved an incredible milestone, becoming the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. That Jubilee marked 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth…
To celebrate this extraordinary anniversary, events have been taking place up and down the country throughout the year, culminating in a four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June. You can expect jubilant street parties all over the North East, with Union Jacks flying high and glasses of fizz being raised even higher.
However, 70 years on the throne calls for more than just street parties. There’s a multitude of amazing events going on across our region over the weekend, so we’ve picked out some of the highlights…
Malton Food Lovers Festival
3 – 5 June
Enjoy a quintessentially British celebration with some of the most exquisite British food in your hands. Malton Food Lovers Festival is back and aligns perfectly with the Jubilee bank holiday. Rothbury Village Green
Various events across the weekend
The picturesque market town of Rothbury in Northumberland will be out in force across the weekend to celebrate the Jubilee. On 2 June, the village green will play host to a town crier proclamation, a piper and lighting of the ceremonial beacon. On 4 June the town will be coming together for a charity walk, followed by celebrations on the green with music from a local pipe band on 5 June. Can you get more royal than afternoon tea in a castle? We think not. Walworth Castle Hotel will be offering the most spectacular afternoon tea in celebration of Her Majesty on 5 June. The prosecco will be flowing, alongside a selection of delicate finger sandwiches, homemade cakes, scones, sweet treats and unlimited coffee and tea. All of this will be accompanied by live music and take place in the castle’s glamorous ballroom. Fit for royalty, you won’t want to miss this fine celebration!

Get your best outfits on and stroll down to Redcar Racecourse to kick off a weekend of Jubilee celebrations with some high octane horse racing action. Northumberland County Show 2022
The much-loved Northumberland County Show is making a triumphant return this year, and it falls perfectly on the Jubilee weekend. Bywell Hall will host a day of fun for all of the family. Expect music, local food, craft and arts traders, a gin and prosecco bar, and lots of animals for the children to meet. It’ll be the ultimate countryside celebration fit for a royal.
Afternoon Tea at South Causey Inn
2 – 3 June
A decadent afternoon tea is an absolute staple of any good Jubilee celebration, but with this one being the Platinum Jubilee, you’ve got to do it in style. County Durham’s South Causey Inn is hosting two spectacular days of private dining in exclusive pods. You’ll be welcomed with a complimentary glass of bubbly before enjoying sensational live music and a selection of delicate sandwiches and scrumptious range of homemade sweet treats. Hardwick Hall Hotel
2 – 3 June
Head over to the picturesque Hardwick Hall Hotel for a jam-packed two days of Jubilee celebrations. Starting on Thursday 2 at 12 noon, you’ll be welcomed to the hotel with a Pimms reception and a delicious buffet half an hour later. Following this, the street party will get into full swing with a sing-a-long featuring British classics. On Friday evening there will be a hilarious night of comedy at the Hall, with three of the UK’s finest comedians doing what they do best on stage. You’ll also be treated to a mouthwatering pie and pea supper, before dancing the night away at the closing disco.
Raby Castle, Darlington
2 – 5 June
There’s a party at a medieval castle and you’re all invited! What better way to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee? The breathtaking Raby Castle in Darlington will be hosting parties, events and special displays across the whole bank holiday weekend.
