Café 21 York brings the Terry Laybourne hospitality we all know and love, with a fresh, Yorkshire twist.
The much-loved Newcastle restaurant group has spread its wings to the Yorkshire capital, and it’s the foodie news we’ve all been waiting for as we return to days of shopping, drinking and dining.
Following the ongoing success of Café 21 at Fenwick Newcastle, Terry and the luxury department store have collaborated once again to introduce his fabulous food to shoppers, tourists and locals in York city centre.
Café 21 is a department store café that dares to be different. It’s a sociable and effortlessly stylish space, serving crafted comforts, lunch bites and sweet treats. It’s a place for friends to catch up over good coffee, to meet for business or to indulge in afternoon tea.
The Fenwick York’s in-store café has had a contemporary facelift and is now charming customers with Café 21’s signature service.
A light, bright and modern dining space awaits, complete with comfortable, curved booth seating, bar stools for a casual catch-up with friends, and white-tablecloth dining for those looking for something a little special.
With a bold, Gatsby-style bar area, splashes of blush pink and dazzling gold tones, paired with warm, calming tones of beige, cream and natural woodwork, it’s an incredibly inviting space for both special celebrations and a laid-back lunch.
It’s sleek, it’s stylish, and alongside it’s seriously delicious food and drinks offering, you are guaranteed service with a smile in a cheerful setting. Perfect for brunch, mid-shopping trip refreshments and an indulgent, early evening feast with friends.
Whether it’s a cup of tea or coffee to start the day, a Taittinger afternoon tea, catch-up cocktails with friends, or a ‘wine and dine’ special celebration, there’s something for everyone when it comes to raising a glass at Café 21 York.
Café 21’s ‘All Day Menu’ serves up everything from soups, salads and small plates, to egg-based brunch dishes, sandwiches, pasta and risotto and large plates including Thai curry, salmon fishcakes, skewered prawns, goat’s cheese lasagne and more.
The ‘Afternoon Tea Menu’ is available for those looking for a real treat. Sit back in stylish surroundings and prepare to be blown away by a beautiful tower of sweet and savoury treats.
For just £22 for two-courses and £25 for three-courses, foodies can enjoy the ‘Fixed Price Menu’, with dishes including prawn and avocado salad, minute steak, sea bass, chocolate brownie and panna cotta.
Head to Café 21 York on a Sunday and tuck into a hearty roast, with favourites including roast leg of spring lamb and rump of beef. Enjoy a two-course lunch for £22 and a three-course feast for £25.
All of this, plus seasonal specials, vegan delights and comfort food favourites from 21 Express outside at the front of the Fenwick store.
This spring, Café 21 York is offering £10 off either the ‘Fixed Price Menu’ or ‘Afternoon Tea Menu’, running from 17 – 31 May 2021.
What we ate
Our mid-shopping lunch date called for a hearty feast. Kicking things off with an Apple Elderflower and Mint Fizz (£5) mocktail (designated driver!) and a Curious Session IPA for my lunch buddy, a seat in a cosy booth was a welcome break after a morning of hitting the cobbled streets of York.
Straight in for the large plates, we opt for the Truffle Burger (£14), a prime rump steak burger topped with dreamy truffle mayonnaise, fig jam and raclette cheese. A match made in burger heaven. The truffle mayonnaise is the real hero here, effortlessly bringing all of the flavours together and creating an uber luxurious burger.
My lunch date opts for the Skewered Prawns, Smoked Paprika and Green Sauce (£17.50), served with saffron rice. A fresh and fiery main packed full of flavour.
We sweeten the deal with a Strawberry Ice Cream Sundae (£6.50) with two spoons. Think fresh strawberries, strawberry ice cream, strawberry jelly, meringue and whipped cream. Delicious!
