Top Tips For Looking After Your Wellbeing

Nicole Wood checks in with Lauren Reece, founder of Bulan Living, to discuss the importance of wellbeing, a good night’s sleep and the ability to switch off from the world around us.
Wellbeing

I think it’s fair to say the past year has been anything but normal, but it has also taught us a lot, particularly surrounding self- care and the importance of looking after ourselves.

NW: How important is wellbeing in your lifestyle and business?

LR: Wellbeing is a huge part of my life, which is a big reason why I set up a business focused on providing products to help create relaxing spaces.

I am a huge believer in making sure that you look after you. When you feel content in the mind and body, the rest will follow.

NW: What would be your top tips for someone who is feeling exhausted or burnt out?

LR: Firstly, I believe a good night’s sleep is absolutely essential to avoid burning yourself out.

Aside from that, I find that taking 15-20 minutes at the end of each day for myself – maybe to read a book or take a bath – really goes a long way in keeping myself grounded and relaxed.

NW: Your go-to Bulan products for someone looking to indulge in a little bit of ‘me time’?

LR: It’s difficult to choose; our range of candles, diffusers and luxurious silk products are perfect for ‘me time’, but I’d have to say our gorgeous hydro cotton robe is absolutely essential. It’s so comfortable and warm – an absolute must for a cold winter’s night.

We are also launching our bedding products in February, which we promise will provide the most luxurious experience to send you off to ‘dreamtime’.

NW: What does your nighttime routine look like?

LR: My nighttime routine usually begins by searching for home ideas on Pinterest while sitting in front of the TV in my Bulan robe, watching the latest binge-worthy series with a couple of candles burning, of course.

I can’t go to sleep before completing my wind-down facial skincare routine, which is cleansing twice (trust me, you will thank me later), toning, applying serum and moisturising.

NW: How important is routine?

LR: I personally believe it’s very important. There has to be a certain structure to each day in order to make sure you’re making the most of it.

Especially now with lockdown restrictions; having a routine can help you feel there is a purpose to each and every day. It’s the best way to be.

NW: Would you say investing in good quality products is key to a good night’s sleep?

LR: Yes, I think so. It goes back to the question about wellbeing, it’s really important to create a sanctuary for yourself. On average, you spend 33 years of your life in bed.

I firmly believe that investing in yourself and your environment, and ensuring the best possible night’s sleep, will always be a fantastic choice.

NW: Which aromas do you recommend for sleep and relaxation?

LR: Choosing a scent is so personal and different for everyone, it really depends on what aromas evoke emotion or memories for that person.

My personal preference is our Bergamot & Musk candle which I light every night – it is so fresh and soothing. For general relaxation, I would recommend our Dark Noir candle.

NW: How important is it to switch off from distractions such as social media before bed?

LR: A wind-down routine is so important for me to be able to have a good night’s sleep. I try to stay away from all screens for about 45 minutes before I go to sleep.

As of late, I have been conscious of the amount of time I spend online, so I have set a timer that reminds me to put my phone down more often. It works… some of the time!

NW: Where do you source your products?

LR: Our robes are made in Turkey, a country famous for the quality of its materials. They are hydro-cotton and made using an advanced weaving technique to create fabric loops which makes the material softer than other cotton towelling.

With the bedding, I spent months sourcing the most breathable, comfortable and manageable fabrics to ensure an amazing night’s sleep.

I am so proud of our products and the hard work that has gone into finding the perfect materials and design, and I am so happy to be able to finally share them with customers.

NW: Are there any new products on the horizon?

LR: We are launching lots of exciting products this year. We have PJs, loungewear and new candle scents coming very soon.

We are also launching our bedding early this year, so keep an eye out for that. However, what I am most excited for is we will soon be launching our hydro cotton robes for babies, from ages 0-3 years old. I gave my goddaughter one for Christmas and I have to say that it is probably the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
