The Luxe Lowdown: Ben Cleary

The Luxe Lowdown: Ben Cleary

Name Ben Cleary
Title Founder and GM at Full Circle Brew Co.

Where is home?

Ryton, Tyne and Wear.

Three reasons you love where you live?

It’s just a stone’s throw from the city and has great walks for dogs.

What do you do for a living?

I run Newcastle’s newest brewery, Full Circle Brew Co., which also houses my wine and craft beer shop, The Pip Stop.

A day in the life of you?

My life is currently consumed by building my business, but family life is also very busy at the moment. I have babies coming out of my ears… with a two-year-old daughter and two new arrivals (twin girls), we are in full nest mode at home and I am completely outnumbered!

Any recent, ongoing or upcoming projects or achievements we should know about?

We are soon to receive our new 6,000 can per hour (cph) canning line, which we aim to use to contract can for others in the local area. We’re also looking at hosting weekly and monthly workshops and events in our brewery tap room.

What does downtime mean to you?

Downtime isn’t a thing for me, but when I do get the odd minute, I spend time with my family and friends and watch ‘easy’ TV programmes.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I always wanted to be a race car driver.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

You don’t have to be the cleverest cookie in the box; work hard, think smart and success will come.

What is your greatest fear?

Not being successful.

Which living person do you most admire and why?

I’d have to say one of my directors, Adam Black. He is my unofficial mentor and when I seek advice, I always end up leaving his room with more questions answered than I had to ask.

What is top of your bucket list?

To do a two-month US road trip – Route 66 on a Harley Davidson.

What is your most treasured possession?

My bottle opener keyring that is always attached to my keys in my pocket. It has saved me so many times at parties.

What does the weekend mean to you?

Time with my wife, my daughters and my friends.

A memorable holiday?

I was lucky enough to go on a buying trip to Bordeaux with our parent business, Lanchester Wines. While we were there, I surprised my wife with our engagement.

Best dress?

It’s got to be a full merch outfit during the day – there’s nothing better than a walking advert. Best dress would be a waistcoat and shirt combo, with some jazzy socks, of course.

Who would be your top three dinner guests and why?

Richard Branson to pick his brains on being a serial entrepreneur. As a food-lover, I need a chef in there – Gordon Ramsay is the obvious choice as I imagine he tells a great story. Chris Pratt for humour.

The last place you ate?

A while ago now, of course, but it was The Patricia in Jesmond, the Sunday lunch is incredible!

The last book you read?

Rich Dad, Poor Dad! A cracking read that really gets your creative juices flowing.

The last thing you listened to?

‘That Peter Crouch Podcast’ is well worth a listen. Album would have to be my favourite of all time, ‘By The Way’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The last thing you watched?

Brooklyn 99… easy TV that I can watch again and again.

Your three luxe things in life?

Taking the hound for a walk on the beach, going wakeboarding and making something challenging in the kitchen for friends.
