My New Normal: Anna Reay

We've been checking in with a few Luxe faces to find out how life in the 'new normal' is looking for them. This week, we're catching up with North East singer, Anna Reay...

I GET UP ON A MORNING FOR…

The excitement of what the day will bring, how much food I can eat and how many songs I can sing.

I don’t need an alarm. I have two fluffy cats, Panda and Orca, who let a out a little squeak to get me up. My little boy Buddy (5) would sleep in until lunchtime if I let him, so I wake him up with an almighty hymn of some description.

BREAKFAST IS…

A cup of tea! I need tea to get me started – several cups at that. I recently posted on Facebook asking what tea bags people use… I felt rather daft and a tad old posting this but I couldn’t believe how many comments I got. Passionate about my tea is an understatement and apparently I’m not the only one.

Then it’s eggs – boiled, scrambled, poached or fried with salmon or avocado.

MY DESK SET-UP INCLUDES…

I have my ‘woman cave’ set up as half office and half recording studio. I can do my admin, recordings and video shoots for my new Annagrams business all in the same room. At the moment it’s a blank canvas with all the tools I need so I have my ‘phenomenal cosmic power’, but ‘itty-bitty living space’.

LUNCHTIME BRINGS…

If I’m busy, I tend to grab things on the go – however, for the last couple of weeks I have coincided lunch with meetings. This has included meet ups with my musician and singer friends for rehearsals, recordings and interviews for my new radio show.

TO BREAK AWAY FROM MY HOME OFFICE…

I’ve been cooking a lot recently – some things have turned out wonderfully well… some haven’t! I find cooking rather therapeutic as it takes my mind off work for a little while. Being a self-employed singer, I find myself thinking of next steps all the time and forever trying to boost my social media. So sometimes I just need to take my head out of my phone (and the clouds) and enjoy a bit of home-cooked dinner.

WHEN 5 O’CLOCK HITS…

Since lockdown I’ve been doing doorstep performances and videograms with personalised songs. So if I’m not out singing or recording in my ‘woman cave’, Buddy and I are either at a garden party BBQ or deciding what we can rustle up in the kitchen.

I’M WATCHING…

I don’t watch a lot of TV, mainly because I don’t have a smart TV so if I get into a series I usually miss the next episodes. At the moment it’s either the news or a good Disney movie is the best I can get away with.

I’M READING…

I did a TV advert a while ago and when I arrived at the scene the crew said “we have provided you with a husband”. We got on very well and it turns out he has written some books, so I’ve just started one of his, it’s called Secret Skin by Frank Coles.

I usually only pick up a book when I’m working away singing on cruise ships. It is only then that I don’t feel guilty having that time to myself. So, although I’ve started this, it will probably take me months to get through it.

I’M LISTENING TO…

New Town Radio (NTR Sounds) live and on podcast. It is a brand new radio show for the North East and I’ve just started a role presenting a show 7pm on Tuesdays.

My show is called Great Ladies of Song. I get the chance to play all of my favourite divas and interview local artists and businesses. Another project that has kept me busy through the lockdown. I’m also slightly obsessed with Sam Fender at the moment. Such an incredible voice.

3 TOP TIPS FOR STAYING AT HOME…

1. Cook. If I know there is food, I’m staying in!

2. Plan in some exercise – whether it’s a bike ride or a bit of time on the trampoline.

3. “Wine a little and sing a lot.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY…

To live without my music would be impossible to do. In this world of troubles, my music pulls me through.” – John Miles

OR

“My gift is my song and this one’s for you.” – Elton John.
