MY WFH REGIME: KAREN PHILLIPS

During these uncertain times, Luxe has been checking in at several 'home offices' across the region. This week, we're getting a taste of farm life at Linnels Farm with our gardening columnist, Karen Phillips...
MY WFH REGIME: KAREN PHILLIPS

I GET UP ON A MORNING FOR…

Our three dogs – two super-obedient Labradors and one lolloping, disobedient GWP puppy – it’s all in the breed! So, the pooches – and to get the sourdough bread in the oven. Lockdown has perfected the routine of loaves rising in the fridge overnight, ready to be baked for breakfast. I slap the oven on and, whilst it heats up, time for the secret weapon: 7 Minute Body Plan – I’m not a natural gym bunny but even I have no excuse for not managing seven minutes each day – and boy do you feel it – those seven minutes hurt!

BREAKFAST IS…

Thick slices of sourdough smothered with whichever homemade jam can be rustled up from the fruit in the freezer: blackcurrant & bayleaf, raspberry & redcurrant, or gooseberry & elderflower. Sometimes it’s porridge swirled with a spoonful of our Shooting Star Marmalade. All followed by an ice-cream sundae of a soya latte – it froths so well and is supposed to help with menopausal symptoms.

MY DESK SET-UP INCLUDES…

I worry slightly that a desk is supposed to resemble your mind: I spread out everywhere and have little notes and piles of paper dotted about. Add in to the equation the need to finish two holiday lets. With a background of working in a fabric shop in my youth, you’ll find handmade headboards, curtains and cushions all fighting for any remaining space.  Now, where did I put my mobile?

LUNCHTIME BRINGS…

A little wander outside to feed the ducks and goats.

TO BREAK AWAY FROM MY HOME OFFICE…

I pop outside to water any plants that need some attention.

WHEN 5 O’CLOCK HITS…

A yearning for a glass of wine. Lockdown has been a real eye opener when visiting the bottle bank and realising it’s all down to just two of us! Habits had to change… so I’ve switched us to cans of interesting IPAs, which can simply be disposed of in our recycling bin.

I’M WATCHING…

I love SAS: Who Dares Wins and spend the whole series saying: “oh, I would just give up!” I also love Rich House, Poor HouseI always cry. Oh, and Normal People is my guilty pleasure – I’m only half way through.

I’M READING…

My daughter, her aunt and I started a virtual book club and this has been a real escape (if not the lightest of reads) from the tedium of lockdown and I can heartily recommend A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara and The Uncommon Life of Alfred Warner in Six Days by Juliet Conlin.

I’M LISTENING TO…

I’m afraid I am a silence kind of girl, so it’s often trying to recognise the plethora of bird calls outside – now curlew I am good at, but others I struggle with. People often ask if I am sitting outside when I am on my mobile inside – the bird noise can be so loud.

3 TOP TIPS FOR STAYING AT HOME…

1. Be kind to yourself .

2. Feed your soul – cake and homemade bread will make any day more bearable.

3. Frankincense oil in a stream diffuser is very soothing and promotes sleep when anxiety about the state of the world sets in – great for stopping the 3am wide-awake inner alarm clock.

QUOTE OF THE DAY…

Every action has an equal but opposite reaction.” – Or as I put it: “Daily eating of delicious sourdough bread necessitates the 7 minute Body Plan daily.”
