MY WFH REGIME: SOPHIA STOVALL

During these uncertain times, Luxe has been checking in at several 'home offices' across the region. This week, we catch up with Sophia Stovall, Head of Development Department at Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.
Sophia Stovall - Working From Home Routine

I GET UP ON A MORNING FOR…

BBC Radio 4 headlines and hoping for sunshine peeping through the curtains.

BREAKFAST IS…

Not my favourite meal of the day during the working week, but usually involves strong coffee and either a piece of fruit (orange or an apple if we have them) or homemade yogurt and berries (defrosted from freezer).

MY DESK SET-UP INCLUDES…

Multiple screens currently take up a central location in our kitchen-diner, while I wait to set up my home office upstairs. I am currently waiting on a wifi booster, desk and bookshelf which are all on order before I can relocate. This will offer me my own space away from the sometimes busy kitchen, which will be invaluable in the continuing Covid-19 climate – and beyond.

LUNCHTIME BRINGS…

An opportunity to get up from my desk, get outside, do any outstanding household chores, any exercise if my motivation was lacking in the morning. Lunch, again can vary. Current trend is apple and crunchy peanut butter, otherwise it’s a social lunch with husband Andrew and brother-in-law Tom, who is living with us during the lockdown.

TO BREAK AWAY FROM MY HOME OFFICE…

Head outdoors. We are lucky to have a garden and space to be able to distance myself from my screens. I am a sun worshipper so if there is a chance of a few rays to take a call or to read any material, I will jump at the opportunity.

WHEN 5 O’CLOCK HITS…

I sign off for the day and either prepare the evening meal if it is my turn (we each take it in turns to cook) or try to utilise the remaining light with a trip outside, make a call to friends/family or complete something on my to do list.

I’M WATCHING…

Not as much as I thought, but enjoying live streaming from theatre, ballet and opera from across the world. I have been taking advantage of getting to know other cultural venues better through virtual tours as well our own a virtual Great North Museum’s collections recently. Opera North’s Ring Cycle was tremendous and an absolute pleasure to watch online.

I’M READING…

Interior design magazines as we have recently moved house, museum catalogues brushing up on TWAM’s collections, and keeping up to date with the blogs published by our brilliant curators, the most recent about the Samurai.

I’M LISTENING TO…

Birds, and lots of them. Audio books, BBC Sounds along with podcasts including TWAM’s six part audio documentary on Tyneside Heavy Metal which has already had over 10,000 listens to the first episode was really quite funny. We have rediscovered our love for Mile Davis’ Kind of Blue for more chilled afternoons and evenings following the recent BBC documentary and Harry Belafonte’s calypso tracks which help to lift the mood.

3 TOP TIPS FOR STAYING AT HOME…

1. Routine wins the day here, with one task to be completed a day. Every task completed is worth celebrating.

2. Challenge yourself, I am setting the task of picking up a pen/paintbrush again and doing a daily yoga practice.

3. Take the opportunity to bring more art into your home through TWAM’s collection dive and artsandculture.google.com will be able to show you some old favourites and help you make some new ones.

QUOTE OF THE DAY…

“We will meet again.” – A beautiful and reassuring sentiment. I look forward to meeting my friends, family and my favourite places again on the other side of Covid-19… #MeetMeAtTheMuseum
