39-year-old Alex Walker from Durham, is one half of Scream for Pizza - one of the North East’s most popular street food names, famed for its wood-fired pizzas. We check in for pizza and to find out her 'luxe things in life'...

After quitting her job as a cruise ship compere and cabaret performer, she joined forces with best friend, Victoria Featherby, on a quest to set up their own business and, in 2014, Scream for Pizza was born.

Today, the friends serve up authentic, Neapolitan-style pizzas, which they learned how to make at one of Napoli’s most celebrated pizzerias, La Notizia, from their mobile pizza van – a former 1970s French army ambulance, affectionally known as ‘Goldie’. This spring/summer will see the duo open their first restaurant in on Starbeck Avenue in Sandyford, Newcastle.

My business partner and dearest friend, Victoria. We spend so much time together and haven’t killed each other yet, which often feels like quite an achievement considering we work in a tiny space together every day. And my parents, who have always been supportive of my sometimes elusive life choices.

For a weekend > We trained in Naples and I have been dreaming of going back again. Mainly to eat more pizza, but also to spend a bit more time on the Amalfi coast, which is a heartbreakingly-beautiful part of the world.

A long weekend > An extended road trip of the USA, with Vicky, culminating in attending Vegas’ famous pizza expo. America is such a culturally-diverse country, making it very interesting from a culinary perspective. Oh and did I mention its pizza scene?!

Favourite food > That’s obvious! Pizza, of course. And great tapas. Can I have two?

Best restaurant > Robertas in Brooklyn. At home, you can’t beat Crab & Lobster.

Perfect weekend > Time spent somewhere remote with a hot tub and a BBQ.

Downtime means > I like to write, so I’d probably say being home alone with my laptop and a cafetière of freshly-brewed coffee.

Best telly > Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, on Food Network, is a guilty pleasure of mine. I secretly covet Guy Fieri’s life on the road!

Best book > The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck.

Best sounds > The drama of waves splashing against rocks and Ella Fitzgerald’s voice!

Best shopping city > I worked in Nagoya, Japan, back in 2011 and shopping for clothes there was something else. Let’s just say all styles are catered for.

Favourite shop > At home, it has to be Fenwick. Especially the Food Hall – I spend a lot of time in there!

Luxe retail treat > I’d prefer to treat myself to a massage at Body and Mind Massage in Newcastle. Their treatments are excellent and, as our work is very physical, I like to go there to melt away any aches and pains!

Perfect party > A New Year’s Eve party at Fox Studios in Sydney, with one of my best mates, Nat. It was the only time I’ve managed to stay up all night long, ’til 8am. I couldn’t do that now!

Best dress > I don’t like to fuss over fashion choices these days, so it’d be something simple, like a black dress or even jeans.

Dinner date > Oprah Winfrey – she’s an icon an inspirational woman. Or Francis Malmann, the celebrated Argentinian chef. Is their enough space at the table for three?

Great food and wine, to nourish the body and soul. Regular travel, because it’s true what they say – it expands the mind. And my close friends and family, because life is better when shared.

Find the pizza pals at various North East food festivals and at The Free Trade Inn, Ouseburn, most Wednesday nights. For updates, visit or follow them on Twitter at @scream_pizza or Instagram at @scream_for_pizza.
