Dr Joanna Berry, associate professor in entrepreneurship at Durham University, is a well-known face in the North East as a business mentor and self-styled ‘pracademic’, a word she coined to reflect the crossover of practical and academic experience. We find out her luxe things in life...

She chairs the North East Institute of Directors and is a great supporter of women in the workplace at all levels, speaking on occasions such as International Women’s Day. Joanna is originally from Hartlepool and now lives in Bowburn, County Durham, with her son Charlie.

Luxe people >>

My son Charlie, 18, and my hugely supportive family. My dog Banksy, a Bolognese who is an important part of our life.

Luxe places >>

For a weekend > The Lake District, particularly Ambleside.

A long holiday > I’ve been to an awful lot of places through work, but have only seen them from a taxi or hotel. I’d love to go back to Thailand and enjoy the rainforests rather than the cities.

A treat > Low Wood Spa in Ambleside for a great massage.

Luxe relax >>

Best food > Fillet steak and chips.

Best wine > I don’t drink, so it’d be tomato juice with spices. The Virgin Mary at Crowne Plaza Newcastle is very good.

Favourite restaurant > Raval Indian in Gateshead. I love the scallops and coriander, but I’ll happily go with their recommendations.

Perfect weekend > It would involve a walk along the beach, maybe at Crimdon, or to Craster and Dunstanburgh for a pub lunch and trip to the smokery for some smoked salmon pâté. I don’t sleep in as I’m up with the dog, but I love a potter in the garden, a good film or a trip to the cinema. Oh, and a Saturday night out with friends.

Downtime means > I don’t have a lot of it, but a book and music.

Best telly > I am a Netflix girl. I binge-watch things like Game of Thrones, Black Mirror, Luther and Blue Planet.

Best book > I love sci-fi classics by the likes of Ray Bradbury, Issac Asimov and Stephen King. I’m a great fan of audio books.

Best sounds > Classical music. Bach.

Luxe shop >>

Best shopping city > Newcastle or intu Metrocentre with my mum – she gets a mobility scooter and we have a great time together.

Favourite shop > In Durham, I love a little shop called Moon which sells unusual stuff for the home, gifts and lovely jewellery.

Luxe retail treat > If I was going to treat myself, I like clothes from ME+EM.

Luxe party >>

A memorable night out > Charlie took me to the cinema recently as a surprise. He bought me ice-cream and we watched Us. Loved it.

Perfect party > Somewhere with lots of friends and people who I can introduce to other people. Ideally it would be nice and warm and on a beach with a barbecue.

Best dress > I have a go-to Vivienne Westwood jumpsuit which is a bit different.

Dinner date > I think Meryl Streep would have lots of interesting things to say.

Your luxe thing in life >>

My dog, Banksy.
