A gorgeous Greek getaway is perfect for a bit of honeymoon R&R. Elysia Agnew checks in to the opulent Ostraco Suites.

Whether you’re party people or a paradise-seeking pair, Mykonos is your honeymoon hit this year. The beautiful blue isle is a picture-perfect backdrop for a loved up getaway. Think beach parties, art galleries, screenings under the stars and sunset cocktails.

It’s your first vacay as husband and wife – and personally, I can’t think of anywhere better to celebrate than the gorgeous Greek island of Mykonos. By day, it’s a place to bask, bathe and listen to your body; by night, it’s the Aegean’s answer to Ibiza. Throw in a few foodie hotspots and a bit of boutique shopping, and you’re ticking all the boxes for an all-round retreat.

Sumptuous suites are set back in the cliffs, looking out over that iconic windmill scene as the sun sets behind them. Beneath us is the windy Mykonos Town, filled with designer boutiques, parlours, galleries and restaurants.

From the wave-crashing restaurants of Little Venice, to the buzzy port and the vibrant beaches dotted around the island, this place is as quaint as it is contemporary – ticking the boxes for all age groups. You’ll find older couples cruising their way around the Aegean, beach club chums checking out the newest party island, young families living it up in hill-top villas and couples retreating in romantic suites. Mykonos is a paradise party – and everyone is invited!

Our beautiful island bolthole is at the design-led boutique hotel, Ostraco Suites. Nestled in the heights of the town and overlooking the glittering coastline, it’s the perfect place to relax and retreat, with the hubbub of Mykonos Town just a 10 minute downhill stroll.

In-keeping with the island’s trademark white-washed style, the hotel’s interiors effortlessly combine a sense of minimalism and contemporary elegance, together with stone-built, traditional touches including a charming hill-top chapel. There’s something beautifully refreshing about this bolthole. It’s stylish, simple and a superb, sun-soaked spot to sit back, relax and get to grips with this glorious Greek isle.

Our deluxe sea view room is a bright, light and breezy hideaway in the hills. The décor is chic and contemporary, with modern touches and discrete splashes of colour here and there, but kept relatively simple. Never underestimate the power of white.

From the dreamy bedding and blankets, to the cosy, cave-like cubbyholes, there’s something very enchanting about this place, and same goes for the outdoor space. For the majority of our stay, you’ll find us bubbling away in our balcony tub – toasting to our time on this romantic island.

The hotel’s pool area is a relaxing retreat in itself. Lap up the sun on luxurious loungers, choose a cocktail from the bar and freshen up in the pool. This outside space is also home to the hotel’s restaurant – a glorious spot to experience the very essence of Greek gastronomy. A forward-thinking foodie spot, Ostraco’s on-site eatery puts its trust in organic, local ingredients. Plant to plate dining, from the hotel’s garden or from producers on the island, means you’re sure to get something fresh, unique and authentic here.

Breakfast is also served poolside. A pretty-as-a-picture backdrop to ease you into the day ahead. Beautiful blooms wind their way around the restaurant and smiling staff serve up the good stuff. Continental and cooked options are served daily – choose from yoghurt, cereal, eggs and omelettes, or go Greek with salads, homemade pies, salmon, cheese and more.

If a pool-plunging, luxe-lounging afternoon is not for you, a short downhill stroll will guide you straight into Mykonos Town. Here you’ll find eclectic emporiums stocking designer desirables, galleries showcasing modern art, gorgeous Greek restaurants, buzzy bars and cute cafes serving up something sweet.

Start your evening with sky high sunset sips at the top end of town, take to the streets of Little Venice for coastal cocktails, or simply get lost in the winding streets where perfect pink blossoms add a pop of colour to the white-washed backdrop.

Our mid-afternoon treat spot is Yassou Mykonos – a teeny tiny ice cream shack satisfying our sweet tooth. Perfect for grab-and-go goodies before climbing the hill back to our cliff-top suite.

Rarity Gallery and The Big White Fine Art Gallery make for magnificent museum mooching opportunities, and the Cine Manto Mykonos Garden is an absolute must for a star-gazing cinema experience. A seat under the stars with supper, wine and popcorn makes for the ultimate straight-from-the-big-screen moonlit flick with a loved one.

Restaurants worth adding to your honeymoon hit list are Casa di Giorgio – an indulgent Italian restaurant festooned with fairy lights, traditional gingham tablecloths and every pasta dish you ever dreamed of.

MYKONOS HONEYMOON: ISLE OF PLENTYIf you’re looking for something a touch trendier, Ling Ling is one of your Mykonos foodie musts. This open-air oasis is a hidden gem in the centre of town, taking diners on an Eastern-inspired, colourful culinary journey. An unassuming side street door opens up to a twinkling, blossom-covered terrace filled with lipstick kisses and clinking champagne glasses. It’s Izakaya concept brings Asian-fusion food to the table and offers up something completely unique for the island. We make our way through the cocktail list while vibrant dishes are brought out to us in tapas style. Everything from dim sum platters, to rib eye beef, stir-fried Chinese mushrooms and Shanghai dumplings. Stylish sunshine food for party people – with an exotic twist.

The Ling Ling soirée is brought to life with the hottest island soundtrack, played out by a resident DJ, who plays a dynamic blend into the early hours.

If you’re a pair of party-goers who really want to get a feel for the electric island life, you must check in at one of the many beach clubs. We kick off our flip-flops and let our hair down for a SantAnna session under the Sunday afternoon sunshine.

Sunglasses and straw hats at the ready! A beachfront cabana is our base for the day as the drinks flow, the tunes play out and the party vibe vamps up as day turns to night.

SantAnna effortlessly merges pool party paradise and beach club bliss into one. Guests can relax in the comfort of their own cocoon-style bed on the sand, or they can set up camp beside the DJ booth by the lagoon-shaped pool. You might prefer to revel in a bit of retail therapy or aromatherapy. The opportunities are endless. SantAnna offers as much paradise as it does party time.

Before we let our hair down, we check in for a bit of laid-back, barefoot dining at the beach club’s Med-style restaurant. Inspired by the delights of the Aegean Sea and the nutrient-rich volcanic soils of the region, the menu boasts healthy comfort food with Greek goodness at its heart.

If you’re struggling to peel yourself away from the striking sunlight, you can enjoy a sumptuous seafood platter from the sushi and raw bar, delivered direct to your sun lounger. But if you’re more about throwing on your caftan and checking in for a breezy bite to eat away from the beach, the poolside restaurant is a fab feast to say the least. Whether it’s lobster spaghetti, a tasty tomahawk, mussels or a sun-soaked salad, there’s something for everyone to savour.

Feeling full of champagne and seafood, an afternoon of sand-between-the-toes strolling and snoozing is the perfect preparation for the SantAnna party. As daylight wanes, cocktails keep us cool and Greek island grooves kickstart the sunset session.

There’s a calming feel about our Ostraco Suite hideaway as we return, retreat and see in the early hours with a dip in our blissful bubble station.

As you can see, there really is something for everything on this beautiful blue and white isle. Whether you are party-goers, an adventure-seeking couple, or a pair looking for a bit of poolside paradise, you’ll be sucked into the magic of Mykonos as soon as you hop off the plane.

A four-hour flight from the UK, followed by a five-minute cab ride, means Ostraco is the perfect honeymoon hit whether you’re jetting off on a quick minimoon, or you just want to make the most of every moment on the island. The travel is as breezy as the beaches.

Mykonos is an island of two halves. There’s the traditional old town surrounded by windmills and waves, and there’s the party paradise, packing in more beach clubs than Ibiza.

Party people and pampered honeymooners should make Mykonos their first port-of-call as husband and wife! | |
