BENIDORM, SUNDERLAND EMPIRE

Elysia Agnew checks in at the sun-soaked Solana for heaps of hilarious Costa Blanca escapades as Benidorm Live lands on the Sunderland Empire stage.
BENIDORM, SUNDERLAND EMPIRE

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

The live theatre version of the show about all-inclusive holidaying is an absolute hoot to say the least. Our favourite sunshine sit-com is taking to theatres across the UK, bringing Costa Blanca escapades and Solana silliness to the stage, and it’s an absolute must if you’re a fan of the show.

The characters we all fell in love with on the box bring this show to life, with plenty of cheeky innuendos, cracking karaoke performances and flamenco dancing thrown in for good measure.

So, how does the stage show live up to the sit-com? It follows the journey of a well-to-do couple who arrive at the Solana after discovering they were double-booked into its sister hotel. On arrival, they find it’s a far cry from the all-inclusive luxury they’d expected. Meeting a whole host of quirky characters along the way, will they be able to relax and enjoy the beauties of all-inclusive Benidorm, or will the hotel’s dysfunctional set-up get in the way?

Throw in a mysterious ‘hotel inspector’, a sleazy bar man, some surprising relationships and a decent dose of sunshine silliness and you’ve got Benidorm on stage – an absolute treat.

WHO’S IN IT?

Plenty of familiar faces – and some lovely newbies, too. The team that made the TV show tick return for the stage show and it’s safe to say they deliver the goods! Together they embody all walks of life when it comes to Brits abroad.

The very dashing Jake Canuso is back as the sleazy (and not-so-Spanish) bar man, Mateo – in all his speedo glory! Cheeky pensioner, Jacqueline is back – thanks to the wonderfully talented Janine Duvitski, who has us in stitches from start to finish. Loose Woman and TV favourite, Sherry Hewson returns as the Solana’s Hotel Manager, Joyce Temple-Savage. And comedy actress, Shelley Longworth is back as staff member, Sam.

Special mention goes to Adam Gillen as lovable lad, Liam – bringing bundles of energy and enthusiasm to the show. Alongside ‘Blow N Go’ co-worker, Kenneth (played by Tony Maudsley), the pair hold the whole show together. A double act sure to make you laugh all night long.

WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT IT?

This show is sure to have you in stitches. It’ll have you giggling about your overseas gadabouts, cringing at cheeky one-liners and rooting for the Solana staff as they fight to keep their all-inclusive hotel open.

It’s great to see the original cast on board – and the newbies too – but the likes of Jacqueline, Mateo and Liam really hold the show together, taking us from Sunderland Empire to sun bed at the Solana in no time!

The set and stage design is also worth mentioning – it moves us from poolside, to reception and back to Neptune’s Bar with ease – and it’s just as we imagined.

The relationships are really what makes this show tick. Whether it’s the awkward upmarket couple and their bickering, the suggestive innuendos shared between Jacqueline and her eccentric friend Derek, Kenneth and Liam getting up to no good in the salon, or Joyce’s questionable management techniques, they’re an odd bunch, but we love them.

WHO SHOULD SEE IT?

Lovers of the TV show – or anyone who wants to have a hoot of a night in the hands of the nation’s best-loved holiday-makers! Pack your bags, book your tickets and check in to see the Solana live on stage in for the very first time.

WHEN IS IT ON?

Now, until Sunday 19 January 2019. Don’t forget to get your side-splitting sunshine fix in Sunderland.
