GET TO KNOW: KERRY LOCKWOOD

Kerry Lockwood turned her passion for interiors into a thriving business back in 2016. Fast-forward two years and she’s now one of the region’s biggest Instagram-influencers, with over 60,000 followers.

Kerry will be sharing her success story and dishing out advice on how you can grow your own Instagram account at Gateshead’s Northern Quarters Festival on 18 November.

It all started when we had to relocate for my husband’s job…

rather than selling our house, we decided to rent it out and find somewhere new to rent ourselves. I began doing more and more decorating and renovating to both properties, which led to family, friends and friends-of-friends asking for help and advice on their own homes. That’s when I decided to set up my website and charge for my services.

My blog is my own little corner of the web…

I set it up so I could document before-and-after photos and write posts, advising tenants on how they could make their rented house feel like home. I then began posting photos on Instagram and it all kind of took off from there.

Every day is different, which is what I love about my job…

it varies from working with clients on their homes, which includes initial consultations through to mood-boards, sourcing and installation, through to product styling, photographing and editing photos for brand collaborations.

My love of interiors started when we bought our own house…

only then did I realise how strong my passion was and how much I loved transforming spaces. Today, I work on all kinds of homes, from new-build properties, through to period-style houses. I also work with property developers on large, home-share developments.

I don’t really follow trends because they change so much…

I prefer to decorate with things I love. I feel your home should reflect the personalities of the people that live there. Having said that, I do have to try to keep up-to-date with them for my clients. For autumn/winter 2018, I think the use of natural materials, such as exposed brick, reclaimed wood and concrete, are going to be much more popular, along with lots of darker, rich and cosy interiors.

Instagram has had a huge impact on the growth of my business and my blog…

I use it everyday and, since my following has grown, I’ve also started working with brands. Styling is one of my main passions, so I love creating content for brands and businesses.

If you want to grow a successful interiors Instagram account, I think it’s important to have a niche…

and to only post great quality photos on your feed. It’s also important to engage with your followers and post at the right time of day, which is usually before 8am, or after 6pm.

Morpeth is home…

We loving living so close to the coast and have so many close friends nearby. We’re also in a great school catchment area and the kids are really happy at the schools they go to, which makes us happy.

The kitchen is the heart of our home…

It’s the place where we all sit and reconnect after a busy day. We sit round my old vintage workbench for dinner and share the good and bad parts of our day.

When I’m not transforming people’s homes, I love spending time with my family…

I have two children who keep me busy and we have a cockapoo called Chester, too, who I love walking. I also love yoga and catching up with the girls over a few cocktails.

My first home was a new build in Cramlington…

which I bought with my husband after a year of renting on Newcastle Quayside. We visited every week to see the progress and I loved watching it being built. It was a three-bed semi – a perfect first-time-buyers home.
