Materials and finishes

Kitchen trends for this autumn will concentrate on natural, contrasting timbers and veneers, a variety of textures with a nod towards the ‘industrial look’ and adventurous, bold colours. For the less adventurous, pastels, coupled with a palette of grey and wood-effect finishes, will be a safer approach. Pastel blue, yellow, pink and green add the wow-factor.

Two colours, two-tones and single colour pallettes

Colour pallettes will have a strong emphasis on contrasting, two-colour designs, which enhances features.

Zones, hide-and-seek and free-standing furniture

The desire for islands, banquette seating and free-standing furniture will remain strong throughout the season. Things like butchers blocks and open shelving are set to become increasingly popular with homeowners, allowing them to add their own personal touches and more texture. A rise in open-plan living has also driven the necessity to move towards hidden storage in all rooms of the house, so I envision lots of that, too.

Illuminating lighting

Statement lighting will be an ongoing trend throughout autumn/winter. When used effectively, lighting can add layers, depth, warmth and contrast.

Hot colour trends for autumn/winter include earthy hues, such as luxurious dark green, along with navy and chocolate tones. As mentioned, pastels will return as the ‘new neutrals’, and metal hues, such as gold and brass, will prove to be popular accents, too.

Textured wallpaper is set to be the ‘in-thing’ as we head towards the end of the year. Patterns will be more daring, contemporary and imaginative.

Vintage mixed with contemporary

Expect a mix of old and new throughout the season, whether through colours, fabrics or furniture. There was a time when ‘clashing’ was deemed as a sin in the interiors world, but for autumn/winter 2018, it’s all about the mix!
