World Chocolate Day arrives on July 7 and in celebration we've rounded up some of the sweetest spots to get your sugar fix!

Davensports Chocolates, Pelaw, Gateshead

Headed up by master chocolatier, Jane Williams, Davensports Chocolates is one of the North East’s most-loved makers of the highest quality, artisan chocolates – top treats that blend tradition and creativity. Chocolates here are crafted the old-school way, preserving the traditional Swiss method of ‘enrobing’. Everything is made by hand with skill and craftsmanship to produce the most exquisite chocolate centres, delicately coated in specifically-selected, smooth and rich chocolate. Like a Willy Wonka machine of delights on a humble scale, a chocolate ‘water’ wheel draws molten chocolate to a height, before it cascades back into the vat as a tiny chocolate waterfall. The result? A beautiful, velvety curtain of chocolate, through which the centres pass on their journey to become the stylish treats that land in your basket. Treats such as new, Great Exhibition of the North-inspired truffles, made with white chocolate and dotted with raisin and shortbread crumb to mimic the flavour of  ‘Singin Hinnies’ – Northumberland’s version of the drop scone!  There are also chocolates inspired by Newcastle Brown Ale and Earl Grey to get your hands on – and you can have a go at making them yourselves at one of the factory’s upcoming workshops. There’s plenty of classes happening throughout the summer – some of which are perfect for crafty kids, involving easy-to-make chocolate lollipops and buttons, and others that are well-suited to businesses in search of memorable, team-building experiences. Staff and corporate guests are welcome to come together and get their hands dirty in the name of chocolate, making their own creations to mark and celebration business success, big or small.

York’s Chocolate Story

Make York’s Chocolate Story your sweet stop during your next visit to the city. Your journey includes a trip through the virtual chocolate factory, where you’ll learn how a simple cocoa bean is transformed into the finest chocolate. You’ll also discover the history of some of York’s most iconic chocolate brands, such as Kit Kat and Terry’s Chocolate Orange, taking a trip down memory lane and reminiscing about retro favourites from times gone by. You’ll also learn the secret of why chocolate makes us feel so good and why it has an ethical and sustainable future. Then, it’s time to master the secrets of the chocolatier, as you make your very own chocolatey creation for yourself, before seeing how the experts do it. Watch skilled chocolatiers as they showcase the art of chocolate-making and sample the fruits of their labour. The venue also offers exclusive hire of the attraction for chocolate masterclasses and corporate events, put together based on your wants and needs. The chocolatiers can also create bespoke products – luxury items, hand-crafted by in-house professionals – for special occasions and gatherings. Whatever the reason behind your visit, one thing’s for sure: you’re guaranteed one tasty journey.
