Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda The Musical arrives at Sunderland Empire, inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved book. Winner of over 85 international awards, the show tells the tale of a young, smart bookworm who, with the help of one kind teacher, overcomes obstacles caused by her wicked headmistress and adopted family.
Sing-a-long to 1940s feel-good tunes on Sunday at Hits From The Blitz, an uplifting matinee music show with big-band personality. Featuring the likes of BBC Radio Big Band and singers and instrumentalists from the Five Star Swing Band, it’ll give music fans a chance to toe-tap and belt-out to songs from Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Glenn Miller and more.

This year’s Write Festival kicks off at The Word this weekend – and there’s lots on for young ones, old ones and everyone in between. Family fun includes Doctor Who monsters, crafts and costume competitions, how-to workshops on illustrating children’s books, silent book discos and fun screenwriting classes for young, budding TV and film directors.
There’s plenty on at Kirkley Hall’s Countryside Festival for kids, from welly wanting and tree climbing, to dog shows, pony and helicopter rides, baking competitions and clay pigeon shooting. We’ll be watching floristry demos, shopping stalls and tucking in to the hog roasts and BBQs on offer.
Get yourselves down to the coast and fill your bellies at this year’s Tynemouth Food Festival. Snack on street food from over 40 tasty stalls, watch live demos and masterclasses with local chefs and producers and sip on wine and cocktails over in the bar marquees.
