FESTIVE TREND WATCH WITH KATE ROSE

Tear up the timetable and relax this Christmas! Here are Kate's top tips for the festive period...
TREND WATCH

The lead up to Christmas is my most favourite time of the year. Decorating my home, picking out the perfect gifts, festive events, Christmas music, and the kids excitement, there is not much that can beat it…

Styling tips…

I love the house to be full of Christmas flowers and foliage, and I always call upon my favourite florist Elaine, from Pure Ground Flowers in Whitley Bay. Beautiful garlands over the mantelpiece, handmade from magnolia leaves, spruce, pistacia foliage, ivy and burgundy amaryllis. Table flowers using earl grey roses, eucalyptus, blue thistles and viburnum berries; all create a real opulent mix, perfect for Christmas entertaining. I love a wreath and this year I’ve opted for two: a stylish copper ring hand twisted with dried moss for hanging indoors and an olive wreath for the front door. All available from Elaine – pure-ground.co.uk  or 07772 617236.

Gift wrapping…

I love to take time, and wrap presents beautifully. This year I have opted for pure simplicity, plain white, teamed with our grey signature print wrap. Tie simple ribbons or string around the centre, add a sprig of rosemary or olive, add a hand-written note on magnolia leaves, to create an interesting twist.

Christmas scents…

I love the house to smell like Christmas, if you don’t have a real tree, treat yourself to a JO LOVES Christmas tree candle, it really smells like the real thing. I love to use dried orange slices to decorate my tree/garlands and pile up in bowls on the coffee table, the smell when these are baking on a low heat in the oven, is just divine.

Alternative Christmas cake…

This year I will be making an alternative Christmas cake a ‘Pistachio & Rosewater Persian love cake’ (click this link for recipe: luxe-magazine.co.uk/persian-love-cake) inspired by Adam at Cole Café & Deli in Sunderland.

Music…

John Mayer  – A search for everything. A mix between acoustic rock and soft blues. Perfect background music for entertaining.

Christmas Eve…

I actually love Christmas Eve, more than Christmas day itself. The excitement in the house, making Christmas sweets with the kids before the pantomime, and the last few preparations for the big day. Once the kids go to bed, the adults get together to share gifts, open a bottle of Champagne – my pick is Gremillet Brut, pick a bottle up from Fenwick food hall, and enjoy with delicious Christmas canapés. I then add the finishing touches to the table for a Christmas breakfast with the kids.

Christmas Morning…

It’s all about the kids…. Unwrapping gifts, building toys, playing new games, so much excitement the hours fly by.  I try to make breakfast, festive but fun, let’s face it, what child wants to sit and have breakfast, when there is a tub of sweets to munch through.  The table set with lots of Tutti Christmas felt decorations, small grey cones are filled with Christmas sweets, buttermilk pancakes dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar are piled high, freshly squeezed orange and a glass of champagne for mum and dad – Just perfect.

Christmas Evening…

We have a large family and it’s often difficult to get everyone together at the same time for a formal Christmas dinner. So, a relaxed, unexpected get together, fits our lifestyle and family plans. Christmas sharing plates, placed on a beautifully set table with lots of Christmas flowers, works well for us, after all, it’s about enjoying good company, and a festive drink or two.
