KINGFISHER COTTAGE, KESWICK

When it comes to weekend accommodation, you’d be forgiven for associating the Lakes with nothing more than little lavish lodges and cosy B&Bs. But, as we’ve discovered, it’s also a place to discover cool, city-style apartments.

Take Kingfisher – a modern first-floor apartment in the heart of Keswick, ideal for couples looking for a comfortable and stylish base from which to explore the Lakes’ rugged beauty.

It’s one of seven apartments in Easedale House, a Victorian lakeland building dating back to 1860, set in a quiet side street (guests receive a private parking permit), just a short stroll from the town centre and its pubs, restaurants, shops, art-deco cinema, theatre and attractions.

The apartment offers open plan living and the light and airy living space/kitchen and diner have been stylishly modernised from top to toe – though an original (and rather beautiful) Victorian fireplace is still in tact.

Other highlights include a smart TV, two-seater leather sofa and retro G-Plan sideboard. The dining table seats up to four, positioned next to the double windows, which look out to Southey Street and across to the slate-built Keswick Methodist Church. A lovely view indeed.

Over in the kitchen, you’ll find all your usual appliances, including a fully-working fan oven, dishwasher and fridge, and in the bedroom (which looks out over the back of the house), you’ll discover a kingsize bed, plenty of wardrobe storage and a luxurious and uber-modern en-suite, decked out with a rainforest-style shower – our favourite.
