Round up the family this weekend and head to Beamish Museum for the Empire and Flag spring weekend. A bit of background… Empire Day was first celebrated in 1902, following the end of the Boer War. Traditionally held on the birthday of Queen Victoria – it was intended to encourage people, especially children, to be aware of their duties as citizens of the British Empire.
Visitors can look forward to traditional band performances, a flag-making school to wave in the parade, songs around the camp fire, games, short films and many many more exciting activities for children and adults alike. Over on the Events Field, young people will be showcasing their amazing, modern-day work including performances by Durham Constabulary Brass Band, meeting the stars of Channel 5’s Police Interceptors, impressive drill displays by the Army Cadet Force and chatting to the crew from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
It’s a fun and fabulous, educational weekend event for all the family – we hope to see you flying your flags!
