Just a stone’s throw from the beach and a few miles North of bustling Whitby, The School House, in Sandsend on the North York Moors coast, promises the best of both worlds – far enough away from the madness of civilisation and with enough calm to soothe even the most stressed out holidaymakers, but close enough to the loveliness of the nearby North York Moors towns, where you can visit for good food and drink, shopping and a bit of a stroll.
The School House is set in the popular village of Sandsend, promising a heady mix of rugged cliff tops, peaceful bays and pretty fishing villages. With long sandy beaches and all the traditional seaside trimmings of yesteryear, you can indulge in a classic English seaside holiday.
The three-bedroom cottage has been completely refurbished into a whitewash retreat with the wow-factor, perfect for those with a penchant for easy-breezy interiors and who love to feel the sand between their toes within minutes from the door.
Interiors-wise, the place boasts a style that’s somewhere in between a loft apartment – the kind you see on Instagram – and a seaside chic cottage. All of the character of the building has been retained, but with a bit of a 21st century makeover. Comfortable and eclectic furniture sits against a white backdrop, with edgy dashes of colour and brooding seascapes thrown in.
The heart of the house is the open-plan sitting room, dining area and kitchen, with its double height ceiling and New England clapboard walls. This space is divided up into separate areas; a cosy corner with soft sofas to chill out and watch TV by the wood-burner in, and the dining/kitchen area where you can pop open a bottle of bubbly and enjoy everyone’s company while you cook up a storm. And for your entertainment, Sky TV, a DVD Player and Wi-Fi are all included.
There are three bedrooms; the first being a grand double bedroom with a kings size bed, the second bedroom a cute twin room, with two single beds. There’s also a family bathroom on this floor with a bath and shower overhead. The third bedroom is upstairs – a generous sized double room with an en-suite bathroom and bath.
Outside, you’ll find a large lawned garden to enjoy, with the sound of the sea floating up the valley towards you. Next door, there’s a boutique bar and restaurant, so if you feel like letting someone else do the breakfast one morning, or even dinner one night, just pop in.
Another little treat worth mentioning is that guests also have another option when it comes to dining-in that cuts out the hassle of shopping for ingredients on your holiday. Staying here means you’ll receive a nifty SNAP! Recipebox delivered to your door, packed enough ingredients to cater for between two and six people.
The holiday boxes can be delivered as part of the concierge service, saving the designated chef precious time sourcing the right ingredients, as well as cutting down on waste. Armed with a detailed step-by-step recipe and pre-measured ingredients that include produce which is either grown, reared or created in Yorkshire, holiday cooks only need to do the creative culinary flourishes to bring together the dishes.
Guests can choose from 11 different recipes, such as coconut-marinated locally-sourced white fish from the coast, Yorkshire Chorizo and chicken jambalya, or pan-roasted pork tenderloin with Cuban mojo sauce.
Up to five main meals can be ordered during a week’s stay and because the boxes are delivered in chilled insulated containers, they can be left somewhere safe until guests arrive back at their cottage after a day’s exploring.
The holiday boxes cost from £20 for one recipe providing a main meal for two people including delivery. A holiday box containing one main meal recipe catering for six people costs £39, which works out at £6.50 per portion. To complete the dine-in menu, guests can also purchase a Yorkshire cheeseboard and Yorkshire drinks box.
