We do love a good barn conversion. Rustic, cosy and, in our experience, usually decked out with most gorgeous, Pinterest-perfect interiors inside, they’re the perfect base from which to enjoy a lazy long weekend with a loved one or two – whether in the depths of winter, or the springiest of months.
The Stables is a fabulous find. Set in Brinkburn Priory, near Rothbury in the Coquet Valley within easy reach of Northumberland’s finest attractions, it’s a secluded, self-catering gem, open for large families or couples with two well-behaved pooches, looking to stay mid-week or over a long weekend.
We could go on all day about why it’s such a steal, but the basics say it all really. Positioned between the lounge area and kitchen is a spacious and wonderfully bright dining area, with a table for up to 10, overlooking the property’s south-facing (and fully-furnished) patio area and surrounding woodland. We love the solid oak floors with toasty underfloor heating.
The kitchen itself is large and open-plan, equipped with all the usual appliances, connected to the lounge area – probably the star of the show. Think high beamed ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows, a working wood burning stove (fuel is provided) and sumptuous leather sofas, with throws a-plenty, for cosy lazing. There’s a large screen TV, too, complete with a DVD player and all your must-watch digital channels.
When it comes to snoozing, there’s a master boudoir, one double and one with twin beds which can be transformed into a super kingsize double upon request. Bagging yourselves the master means you’ll enjoy views of the River Coquet and the garden with Brinkburn Priory in the distance. It’s immaculately styled, with a modern en-suite, packed with luxury toiletries.
There’s also a single bedroom – a quirky snug that can be accessed via a separate staircase from the kitchen and family room – that’s available by arrangement only and additional kids’ beds can be provided too. You’ll also find a family bathroom, complete with separate shower and tub, too.
Outside, a large patio and garden area awaits, complete with trendy outside furniture and a barbecue. There’s 35 acres of woodland and countryside surrounding Brinkburn right on your doorstep and a stay here means you’ll have unrestricted access to for walking (although four-legged friends must be kept on leads near livestock). Fishing in the river is also permissible by guests by arrangement.
