Marrying honey-coloured stone, recycled materials and wood, this cool, curved cottage is an architect’s dream. Its panoramic views of Eriboll, a mirror-like sea loch, and majestic mountainside backdrop will keep keen photographers happy, too.
With thick floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning south-facing views, the interior is simple yet elegant with soft, polished cement flooring sweeping throughout the whole property. It’s also heated, making it heavenly toasty on cold, winter days.
We love the lounge area, which takes centre stage. Cosy up in front of the huge log burner, snuggle up on two plush sofas, designed for prime lounging while looking out of the floor-to-ceiling windows, and take advantage of the state-of-the-art home entertainment system when daylight fades and the sky turns inky-black.
The sleek wood and chrome kitchen boasts stylish industrial lighting and the sink and worktops – hand-finished in Caithness stone – offer a perfect space to prepare a delicious supper of locally-sourced seafood or beef (why not?). Dine at the grand table in the living room, where you can take it those views again between mouthfuls.
A peaceful slumber is guaranteed here, thanks to a whopping seven-foot bed, feather topped and made of lacquered steel and leather. This room too has floor to ceiling windows, affording you amazing views as the sun rises in the morning. Thoughtfully-selected bespoke furniture compliment the rest of the space.
If you fancy getting outdoors, Durness is a walker’s paradise, enjoying one of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. An abundance of wildlife and vast open space mean blowing away those pesky cobwebs has never been easier – or more beautiful – and the village itself is as pretty as a picture. Head to the coastline for towering cliffs and golden beaches backed by rugged mountains and expansive moorland.
